Flyets n\u00e6rmeste slektning er det amerikanske\u00a0bombeflyet Douglas A-20\u00a0Havoc\u00a0fra 1941. Ingeni\u00f8rer i\u00a0Douglas Aircraft Company brukte fritiden p\u00e5 \u00e5 utvikle et\u00a0lite forretningsfly inspirert av bombeflyet. Resultatet ble et\u00a0lite tomotors fly med navnet Aero Commander.\u00a0President\u00a0Dwight D. Eisenhower brukte ofte et slikt fly n\u00e5r han fl\u00f8y fra\u00a0Washington D.C. hjem til ranchen sin i helgene. I Norge\u00a0ble flytypen blant annet brukt til luftfotografering og av\u00a0Statens forurensningstilsyn til oljevernberedskap.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De f\u00f8rste flyene hadde plass til to flygere og opptil\u00a0sju passasjerer. Flyet ble spesielt popul\u00e6rt for\u00a0forretningsfolk og andre som tok flyreiser\u00a0utan\u00a0\u00e5 bruke rutefly.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arbeidet med \u00e5 utvikle flyet tok til i 1944.\u00a0Samme \u00e5r ble flyprodusenten Aero Design\u00a0and Engineering Company etablert. I 1950\u00a0byttet det navn til Aero Commander\u00a0Company. I 1955 bestilte US Air Force 15\u00a0slike fly. Et av disse ble det f\u00f8rste flyet i\u00a0fargene til Air Force One som president\u00a0Dwight D. Eisenhower brukte til kortere\u00a0reiser i USA.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flytypen var i stadig utvikling, helt til 1986\u00a0da det siste flyet ble bygd. Skroget ble\u00a0forlenget, det fikk trykkabin og motorene ble\u00a0endret fra stempel- til turbopropmotorer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museets eksemplar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Flymuseet har en Grand Commander\u00a0680FL fra 1964. Det har plass til to flygere\u00a0og elleve passasjerer. Det ble f\u00f8rst brukt i\u00a0Canada og USA f\u00f8r det kom til Norge i 1972.\u00a0Den f\u00f8rste norske eieren var Nor-Fly. Det ble\u00a0overtatt av Fjellanger-Wider\u00f8e\u00a0allerede\u00a0i 1973.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flyet ble fl\u00f8yet til museet 31. mai 1989,\u00a0p\u00e5 dagen da luftdyktighetsbeviset gikk ut.\u00a0Den gule sylinderen p\u00e5 undersiden er en\u00a0kopi av radarantennen som stod p\u00e5 flyet\u00a0da det ble brukt p\u00e5 oppdrag for Statens\u00a0forurensningstilsyn.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
