Aero Grand Commander er et amerikansk forretningsfly tilh\u00f8rende flyserien Aero Commander 500. Aero Design and Engineering Corporation ble etablert i USA i desember 1944 for \u00e5 lage et passasjerfly med plass til fem til syv personer. Arbeidet ble gjennomf\u00f8rt p\u00e5 fritidene av en gruppe flyingeni\u00f8rer fra Douglas Aircraft Companys A-20 Team. Gruppen \u00f8nsket \u00e5 designe et lite foretningsfly med utgangspunkt i selskapets A-20 bombefly. Deres arbeid resulterte i at prototypen for det som skulle bli en lang serie Commandere tok til luften i april 1948.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For \u00e5 kunne ta flere passasjerer ble skroget etter hvert forlenget med omkring to meter. Med dette fikk flyet en lenggde p\u00e5 12,6 meter og et vingespenn p\u00e5 15 meter. Dets toppfart var 435km\/t. Serien ble markedsf\u00f8rt som Grand Commander. Denne versjonen fl\u00f8y f\u00f8rste gang i desember 1962. Grand Commander ble flydd av to piloter og kunne ta opp til 11 passasjerer. Senere utgaver ble modernisert med trykkabin og turbopropmotorer.<\/p>\n

Norsk bruk<\/strong>
\nAero Grand Commander fikk aldri noe utpreget bruk i Norge. Maskinen forble forholdsvis sjelden her til lands, men noen maskiner kom til landet. Flytypen ble blant annet bruk av NorFly og Fjellanger-Wider\u00f8. Sistnevnte brukte flyet til kartleggings- og fotooppdrag. Flytypen ble dessuten leid ut til Statens Forurensningstilsyn for oljevernberedskap.<\/p>\n

Museets fly<\/strong>
\nMuseets fly er bygd i 1964. Det startet sin tjeneste i Canada. Etter to \u00e5r ved Sam Hashman Management Ltd i Calgary ble flyet solgt til USA. I mars 1972 ble flyet kj\u00f8pt av NorFly. I 1983 ble flyet videresolgt til Fjellanger-Wider\u00f8. Da flyets luftdyktighetsbevis gikk ut 31. mai 1989 fikk flymuseets formann en foresp\u00f8rsel per telefon om museet var interessert i en Grand Commander. Senere samme dag stod flyet parkert utenfor museet!<\/p>\n
