It can\u00a0therefore be controlled equally well\u00a0from the front seat as\u00a0the back seat. Usually, the student would sit in the front\u00a0seat, with the instructor seated behind them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fairchild PT-26 Cornell is an American aircraft\u00a0introduced at military flight schools in 1939. Norwegian\u00a0pilots who were trained during the war at Little Norway in\u00a0Canada flew this type of aircraft. After the war, the aircraft\u00a0were used at the flight school of the Royal Norwegian\u00a0Air Force located at V\u00e6rnes since the early 1950s.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fuselage is made of steel tubing and fabric.\u00a0The propeller is made of wood, as are the wings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engine produces 200 hp. The Royal Norwegian\u00a0Air Force stopped using the aircraft in 1956. Many of\u00a0them were then sold to flying clubs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft was developed by the American\u00a0aircraft manufacturer Fairchild Aircraft and\u00a0was built as a training aircraft for the United\u00a0States Army Air Corps. The early version had\u00a0an open cockpit. During the war, the aircraft\u00a0was continuously\u00a0improved\u00a0and it received\u00a0new designations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Norwegian service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the war, a Norwegian flight school\u00a0was established outside Toronto in Canada.\u00a0The school became known as Little Norway.\u00a0The first training aircraft were six Fairchild\u00a0M-62 Cornell. The students received 100\u00a0flight hours in the Fairchild Cornell before\u00a0moving on to fighter aircraft or larger\u00a0multi-engine aircraft. At the turn of the year\u00a01944\/45, the Norwegian flight school was\u00a0moved to\u00a0Winkleigh\u00a0in southern England.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the war years, the flight school&nbsp;received a total of 86 Fairchild Cornell of&nbsp;various models: PT-19, PT-19A, and PT-26.&nbsp;The PT-19A was the first to have a&nbsp;closedcockpit. The first aircraft of this type arrived&nbsp;in Norway in November 1945 and were used&nbsp;at the military flight school then located at&nbsp;Gardermoen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Norway joined NATO in 1949, pilot\u00a0training was moved from Gardermoen to the\u00a0USA and Canada. In Norway, only selection\u00a0flying was conducted. The students received\u00a020\u201325 flight hours during which they were\u00a0evaluated as candidates for pilot training\u00a0abroad. The Fairchild Cornell was used as a\u00a0military training aircraft until the Saab 91B-2\u00a0Safir took over in the autumn of 1956.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The museum<strong>\u2019<\/strong>s aircraft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum\u2019s aircraft arrived at Little\u00a0Norway in Canada in late summer 1944.\u00a0At the turn of the\u00a0year 1944\/45, the\u00a0Norwegian flight school and its aircraft were\u00a0moved to England. In the autumn of 1945,\u00a0the aircraft, together with the other aircraft\u00a0of the flight school, was transferred to\u00a0Norway. It was then taken into use by the\u00a0military flight school at Gardermoen. In the\u00a0early 1950s, the school was moved to\u00a0V\u00e6rnes, and the museum\u2019s aircraft followed.\u00a0In 1961, the Norwegian aero club\u00a0Ullensaker\u00a0Flyklubb\u00a0took over the aircraft. It was\u00a0grounded in 1963.\u00a0Flyhistorisk Museum Sola\u00a0took over the aircraft from the Norwegian\u00a0Armed Forces Museum in the early 1990s.\u00a0During the restoration, parts of the aircraft\u00a0had to be rebuilt from scratch, including the\u00a0wings, which are mainly made of plywood\u00a0and fabric.
