When the\u00a0aircraft was introduced in the 1930s, open biplanes were\u00a0still common. Messerschmitt Bf 109 was something\u00a0entirely different: both the fuselage and wings were made\u00a0of metal, it had low-mounted wings, retractable landing\u00a0gear, an enclosed cockpit, a powerful engine and\u00a0outstanding flight performance. It proved to be a deadly\u00a0opponent for enemy aircraft that encountered it in\u00a0countless aerial battles during the Second World War.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum aircraft crashed in 1943. It lay on the\u00a0seabed off\u00a0Egersund\u00a0until 1988, when two fishermen\u00a0hauled it up in their trawl. After tens of thousands of\u00a0volunteer working hours, the aircraft now stands as\u00a0one of the jewels of the museum\u2019s collection.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a good\u00a0example of how the German war industry\u00a0developed entirely new technology in the\u00a0years leading up to the Second World War.\u00a0Work on the aircraft began in the mid-1930s,\u00a0when Ministry of Aviation (Nazi Germany)\u00a0announced a competition for a new fighter\u00a0aircraft. Bayerische\u00a0Flugzeugwerke\u00a0won\u00a0the competition. The work was led by the\u00a0company\u2019s chief engineer, Willy Messerschmitt.\u00a0In the\u00a0summer of 1938\u00a0he was promoted\u00a0to head of the company, which was\u00a0then renamed Messerschmitt AG.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New and improved versions of the aircraft\u00a0were introduced throughout the war,\u00a0including new engines. The first engine was\u00a0the Junkers Jumo 210D, producing about\u00a0650\u2013670 hp. It was soon replaced by the\u00a0liquid-cooled V-12 Daimler-Benz DB 601\u00a0and later a DB 605 engine, which eventually\u00a0delivered nearly 1500 hp. Special versions\u00a0were also produced with pressurised\u00a0cockpits, like our aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft also had some weaknesses,\u00a0including a relatively short range. It also had\u00a0a tendency to tip over during take-off and\u00a0landing on primitive airfields, as the landing\u00a0gear wheels were positioned very close\u00a0together.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Norway, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was&nbsp;used throughout the Second World War.&nbsp;Here at Sola, the aircraft protected the&nbsp;airfield and German shipping traffic off the&nbsp;coast of&nbsp;J\u00e6ren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The museum\u2019s aircraft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum\u2019s aircraft was found by two\u00a0shrimp fishermen off the coast of Sirev\u00e5g,\u00a0in 1988. The aircraft got caught in their\u00a0trawl, and the fishing boat was too small to\u00a0bring the aircraft up unto the deck. Instead,\u00a0the fishermen secured the wreck to the side\u00a0of the hull and slowly headed back to land.\u00a0The paint and markings on the upper\u00a0surfaces of the wings were relatively well\u00a0preserved, but otherwise the aircraft was\u00a0badly damaged. Both the nose and tail\u00a0sections were missing. At the museum,\u00a0members were well underway with cleaning\u00a0the wreck when they discovered\u00a0a large\u00a0number of\u00a0live rounds of ammunition.
