Etter at han var ferdig med gymnaset i 1970 m\u00f8tte han opp p\u00e5 Steinkjersannan milit\u00e6rleir ved Steinkjer for \u00e5 avtjene f\u00f8rstegangstjenesten i H\u00e6ren. Thorbj\u00f8rn fant raskt ut at H\u00e6ren neppe var tingen for han. Da de ferske rekruttene like etter oppm\u00f8te fikk bes\u00f8k av representanter fra Forsvarets Orientering og Rekrutering som fortalte om ulike utdanningsmuligheter i Forsvaret, var han rask med \u00e5 s\u00f8ke p\u00e5 utallige utdanninger i Sj\u00f8forsvaret og Luftforsvaret. Han skulle bort fra H\u00e6ren. Det visste seg at det var Flyskolen som hadde opptak f\u00f8rst og Thorbj\u00f8rn ble kalt inn til opptakspr\u00f8ver p\u00e5 Rygge sammen med ti andre fra kompaniet. Av disse ti var det kun Thorbj\u00f8rn som ble sendt videre til V\u00e6rnes. Da de skulle reise fra Steinkjersannan milit\u00e6rleir for \u00e5 delta p\u00e5 opptaket til flyskolen hadde kapteinen deres fortalt dem at de bare kunne sette igjen ryggsekkene sine p\u00e5 plassene sine for de ville komme tilbake ganske snart alle mann. Han fikk med andre ord nesten 100% rett! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes fikk Thorbj\u00f8rn 14 timer p\u00e5 Saab 91B Safir f\u00f8r han ble sendt videre til Columbus Air Force Base i Mississippi etter \u00e5 ha best\u00e5tt uttaksflygningen og de \u00f8vrige opptakspr\u00f8vene p\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes. P\u00e5 Columbus Air Force Base fl\u00f8y han f\u00f8rst noen timer i Cessna T-41 f\u00f8r han gikk videre til Cessna T-37 Tweet og Northrop T-38 Talon. Thorbj\u00f8rn forteller at flytiden p\u00e5 lavtflyging og en del andre ting var kuttet drastisk ned p\u00e5 denne tiden. Amerikanerne \u00f8nsket \u00e5 f\u00e5 elevene gjennom utdanningen s\u00e5 raskt som mulig p\u00e5 grunn av Vietnamkrigen som fremdeles raste mens Thorbj\u00f8rn var p\u00e5 Columbus Air Force Base i 1971\/72. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>29. september 1972 mottok Thorbj\u00f8rn vingen. Selv om de norske elvene fikk beskjed om at de skulle fly F-5 n\u00e5r de kom tilbake til Norge gikk det ikke slik. Etter hjemkomsten ble han beordret til 333 skvadron for \u00e5 fly P-3B Orion fra And\u00f8ya. Thorbj\u00f8rn ble dermed sendt tilbake til USA og Pax River litt s\u00f8r for Washington D.C. for \u00e5 f\u00e5 utdanning p\u00e5 det maritime patruljeflyet. I begynnelsen av 1973 var han p\u00e5 plass p\u00e5 And\u00f8ya og begynte \u00e5 fly Orion som styrmann. Her ble han v\u00e6rende frem til han begynte p\u00e5 Luftkrigsskolen h\u00f8sten 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like f\u00f8r sommeren 1977 ble Thorbj\u00f8rn ferdig p\u00e5 Luftkrigsskolen. Etter et stopp innom 718 skvadron p\u00e5 Sola for overf\u00f8ring til F-5 Freedom Fighter ble han beordret til 338 skvadron p\u00e5 \u00d8rlandet. Her var han frem til 1982. P\u00e5 \u00d8rlandet var han OPS-sjef mellom 1979 og 1980. Da han i 1982 fikk valget mellom \u00e5 dra til Bod\u00f8 eller USA som instrukt\u00f8r p\u00e5 Sheppard Air Force Base i Texas, valgte han sistnevnte. P\u00e5 dette tidspunktet var ikke instrukt\u00f8rrollen en ukjent oppgave for Thorbj\u00f8rn som allerede hadde hatt flere ulike instrukt\u00f8rjobber i Luftforsvaret. Foruten flere korte perioder som instrukt\u00f8r p\u00e5 Saab Safir p\u00e5 flyskolen p\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes, hadde han ogs\u00e5 v\u00e6rt 338 skvadrons instrukt\u00f8r p\u00e5 Air Combat Maneuvering etter at han selv hadde blitt kurset av amerikanske instrukt\u00f8rer fra Top Gun. Han hadde ogs\u00e5 flere perioder som instrukt\u00f8r i s\u00e5kalt \u00abWinter Survival\u00bb for Nato p\u00e5 Sp\u00e5tnd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Etter halvannet \u00e5r i USA tok han kontakt med Braathens SAFE som kort tid senere tilb\u00f8d han jobb. En av grunnene til at han forlot forsvaret var fremtidsutsiktene for mange flyttinger og den belastningen det ville medf\u00f8re for familien. Thorbj\u00f8rn ble v\u00e6rende i Braathens fra 1983 frem til han gikk av med sluttpakke i 2005, \u00e5ret etter at SAS hadde overtatt Braathens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thorbj\u00f8rn Kj\u00e6rstadble intervjuet av Sondre B.
