Han minnes at han var en guttunge med stor flyinteresse. Han bodde i Rygge og kunne daglig observere flystasjonenes jagerfly p\u00e5 himmelen over seg. Han konstaterer at dette nok bidro til denne store flyinteressen. Han ble kjapt dratt inn i modellflybyggingens verden. Han brukte alle konfirmasjonspengene sine p\u00e5 en radio til fjernstyrte modellfly. Da han var 15 \u00e5r begynte han \u00e5 fly seilfly. Han var ogs\u00e5 en ivrig leser av flymagasin og betegner interessen sin som en ganske ensporet greie. Fra han ble 15 \u00e5r fortsatte han \u00e5 fly seilfly hver sommer frem til han stilte p\u00e5 opptak til Flyskolen i januar 1979. Etter \u00e5 ha kommet seg gjennom den to uker lange opptaksperioden gikk veien videre med tog til V\u00e6rens sammen med 32-33 andre h\u00e5pefulle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vel fremme p\u00e5 V\u00e6rens ble Viggo og de andre ungdommene kastet inn i en \u00e5tte uker lang rekruttperiode f\u00f8r de begynte uttaksflygningen p\u00e5 Saab 91B Safir. N\u00e5r uttaksflygningen var ferdig, var det knapt ti igjen. I mai 1980 ble de sendt videre til USA for \u00e5 ta fatt p\u00e5 selve flygerutdannelsen. Sammen med fem andre ble Viggo puttet inn i en amerikansk klasse p\u00e5 Reese Air Force Base rett vest for Lubbock i Texas. Her fl\u00f8y han T-37 Tweet og T-38 Talon frem til han kom hjem som ferdigutdannet jagerflyger i mai p\u00e5f\u00f8lgende \u00e5r.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tilbake i Norge ble Viggo f\u00f8rst beordret til Rygge for \u00e5 gjennomf\u00f8re fighter lead inn trening p\u00e5 F-5 ved 336 skvadron. Tidligere hadde overf\u00f8ringsflygningen hvor de nyutdannede flygerne fikk innf\u00f8ringen til norske forhold blitt gjennomf\u00f8rt p\u00e5 718 skvadron p\u00e5 Sola. Viggo var blant de f\u00f8rste flygerne som fikk overf\u00f8ringstreningen p\u00e5 336 skvadron etter hjemkomsten fra USA. Viggo f\u00f8ler at han kom til en skvadron som nok ikke hadde vokst seg helt inn i sin nye rolle. Dette kan ha v\u00e6rt medvirkende til at Viggo ikke f\u00f8lte seg spesielt tilfreds som elev p\u00e5 overf\u00f8ringskurset. Omtrent halvveis i kurset spurte han om \u00e5 f\u00e5 fly noe annet, men ble oppfordret til \u00e5 fortsette. Noen uker senere ble det imidlertid avgjort at han burde fly en annen flytype enn jagerfly. Han fikk beordring til 719 skvadron og begynte \u00e5 fly Twin Otter i Bod\u00f8 de neste \u00e5rene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viggo minnes tilbake til tiden p\u00e5 719 skvadron i Bod\u00f8 som en flott tid med et variert oppdrag. Selv om hverdagen stort sett bestod i passasjerflygning, var det ogs\u00e5 mye annet interessant som preget skvadronenes hverdag. Viggo ser blant annet tilbake til spennende operasjoner fra upreparerte rullebaner, sandstrender, og ikke minst flygning med skiutstyret Twin Otter i den sn\u00f8dekte fjellheimen. Han forteller ogs\u00e5 om testflygning i forbindelse med utviklingen av Penguin-missilet, samoperasjoner med marinejegerne og fotooppdrag for Forsvarets etterretningstjeneste i Nord-Norge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I l\u00f8pet av tiden i Bod\u00f8 fikk han ogs\u00e5 bakseteturer i b\u00e5de F-104 og F-16. Dette gav etter hvert s\u00e5pass stor mersmak at han s\u00f8kte seg tilbake til jagerfly etter nesten fem \u00e5r med Twin Otter\u2019n i Bod\u00f8. H\u00f8sten 1986 gjennomf\u00f8rte han teknisk kurs for F-5 etterfulgt av nytt fighter lead inn trening p\u00e5 F-5 p\u00e5 336 skvadron. N\u00e5 syntes han tilv\u00e6relsen som jagerflyger var tipp-topp og endte opp med \u00e5 tilbringe sine fire siste \u00e5r i Luftforsvaret som F-5-flyger p\u00e5 336 skvadron p\u00e5 Rygge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ettersom Viggo hadde opparbeidet seg god erfaring p\u00e5 \u00e5 instrumentflyging fra tiden i Nord-Norge, ble han raskt instrumentinstrukt\u00f8r i skvadronen. Hverdagen p\u00e5 336 skvadron var p\u00e5 denne tiden preget av en mangfoldig arbeidsdag ettersom skvadronen foruten overf\u00f8ringsrollen for nyutdannede flygere fra USA, ogs\u00e5 skulle ha en luft-til-luft-rolle og drive elektronisk krigf\u00f8ring. 336 skvadron ble ogs\u00e5 flittig brukt som motstander for flygere og elever p\u00e5 F-16-oppsatte 332 skvadron i luft-til-luft-trening. For \u00e5 gi flygerne p\u00e5 332 skvadron realistisk trening, fl\u00f8y 336 skvadron blant annet inn\u00f8vde profiler som man forventet at en sovjetisk motstander ville bruke i en krigssituasjon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Etter sin milit\u00e6re karriere fortsatte Viggo \u00e5 fly sivilt i 1990. F\u00f8rst noen \u00e5r for Braathens, f\u00f8r han ble med over til SAS i forbindelse med oppkj\u00f8pet. I 2010 ble han med p\u00e5 et internt bytte av jobb til Wider\u00f8e, der 54 SAS flygere fikk tilbud om \u00e5 delta i en ekspansjon av Wider\u00f8e. SAS eide den gangen 97% av Wider\u00f8e. Han fl\u00f8y p\u00e5 kortbanenettet de siste fire \u00e5rene av sin karriere, inntil han gikk av med pensjon i 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viggo Stenbekk ble intervjuet av Sondre B.
