Han vokste opp i Stj\u00f8rdal, et steinkast unna V\u00e6rnes. Dette kom til \u00e5 prege hans senere yrkesvalg. I sin ungdom lot han seg fascinere av \u00e5 n\u00e6rmest til daglig observere flyene fra Flyskolen, og Vampire-jagerne fra 337 skvadron. Som ungdom ble han aktiv i V\u00e6rens flyklubb, og han ble dratt mer og mer inn i flymilj\u00f8et. N\u00e6rheten til det milit\u00e6re og sivile flymilj\u00f8et p\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes, f\u00f8rte til at mange ungdommer fra Stj\u00f8rdal s\u00f8kte p\u00e5 Flyskolen. Det gjorde likevel ikke Ivar. I hvert fall ikke i f\u00f8rste omgang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I 1957 fikk Ivar ansettelse som meteorologassistent ved v\u00e6rtjenesten p\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes. Senere p\u00e5 \u00e5ret s\u00f8kte han seg over til Luftfartsverket. Frem til 1961 tjenestegjorde han som flygelederassistent ved t\u00e5rnet og kontrollsentralen til Trondheim lufthavn \u2013 likes\u00e5 \u00d8rland flystasjon. Planen var egentlig \u00e5 utdanne seg til flyveleder i Storbritannia, men studieplass lot vente p\u00e5 seg. Sjefen for Flyskolen p\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes hintet om at Ivar ikke burde starte som flyveleder, men heller starte p\u00e5 Flyskolen. P\u00e5 dette tidspunktet hadde Ivar privat flysertifikat og utsjekk p\u00e5 Fairchild Cornell. Han hadde ogs\u00e5 v\u00e6rt formann i flyklubben p\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes en periode. Ivar hoppet dermed p\u00e5 ideen og s\u00f8kte seg til Flyskolen. &nbsp;Han ble kalt inn til opptakspr\u00f8ver inn i januar 1961.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Etter opptakspr\u00f8ver og p\u00e5f\u00f8lgende uttaksflygning, ble Ivar sendt videre til Canada. F\u00f8rste stopp var Centralia hvor han gjennomf\u00f8rte spr\u00e5kskole og noen timer p\u00e5 Chipmunck. Han fl\u00f8y deretter Harvard fra Penhold og T-33 fra Gimli. I januar 1963 fikk Ivar vignen. Han ble deretter sendt til Chatham for \u00e5 gjennomf\u00f8re Low level navigation and bombing school med\u00a0F-86 Sabre. Etter et halvt \u00e5r p\u00e5 Chatham, ble han sendt hjem igjen til Norge i juli 1963. Hjemkomsten til Norge ble i starten oppfattet som en stor nedtur. Luftforsvaret hadde akkurat tatt i bruk Albatross og hadde derfor stort behov for flygere p\u00e5 de maritime patruljeflyene. Samtlige flygere som kom fra Canada p\u00e5 denne tiden, ble derfor plassert p\u00e5 Albatross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siste halv\u00e5r 1963 og de f\u00f8rste m\u00e5nedene i 1964 tilbrakte Ivar p\u00e5 330 skvadron i Sola sj\u00f8 for oppl\u00e6ring og utsjekk p\u00e5 Albatross. Han ble deretter beordret til 333 skvadron p\u00e5 And\u00f8ya. Herifra fl\u00f8y han operative oppdrag med Albatross over Barentshavet og Norskehavet. Skuffelsen over \u00e5 bli beordret til 333 skvadron for \u00e5 fly Albatross fra And\u00f8ya forsvant raskt. Ivar ser i dag tilbake p\u00e5 en meget interessant og spennende tjeneste som han er godt forn\u00f8yd med.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Etter to og et halvt \u00e5r p\u00e5 333 skvadron ble Ivar beordret til Sola. Her fl\u00f8y han som instrukt\u00f8r p\u00e5 718 skvadron som fremdeles var oppsatt med T-33 T-bird. Ivar understreker at han syns det var veldig kjekt \u00e5 f\u00e5 fly jagerfly igjen. Etter halvannet \u00e5r p\u00e5 718 skvadronen s\u00f8kte hans seg til Flyskolen p\u00e5 V\u00e6rnes som instrukt\u00f8r. Siden T-33\u2019n skulle fases ut og plikttjenesten var ved veis ende, virket dette som en god ide i p\u00e5vente av en sivil flygerjobb. I september 1968 ble Ivar ansatt som flyger i Braathens SAFE. Etter at han startet som sivilflyger, fullf\u00f8rte han realartium som privatist i Oslo etterfulgt av Ex.Phil. ved Universitetet i Oslo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ivar Erling Hongseth ble intervjuet av Sondre B.
