Han ble tidlig involvert i det lokale flymilj\u00f8et gjennom sin far som var en sentral p\u00e5driver for opprettelsen av et flymilj\u00f8 i Larvik. I 1932 hadde nemlig Peter sin far kommet\u00a0 hjem fra Canada med flysertifikat. Guttungen lot seg fasciner av milj\u00f8et og ble raskt dratt inn i det gjennom sin far. Etter at Peter hadde tatt examen artium i 1943 var han i sitt f\u00f8rste semester p\u00e5 Universitetet da studentene ble arrestert. Han kom seg unna, og flyktet i 1944 over til Sverige . Gjennom kontakt med Bernt Balchen kom han inn p\u00e5 den norske seilflyskolen p\u00e5 Orhem, i p\u00e5vente av det store m\u00e5let som var \u00e5 komme videre til Storbritannia for \u00e5 slutte seg til det norske Luftforsvaret i eksil. Dit kom han i januar 1945 og videre til den nye norske flyskolen p\u00e5 Winkleigh\u00a0\u00a0 som p\u00e5 denne tiden hadde tatt over stafettpinnen fra Little Norway. P\u00e5 Winkleigh\u00a0\u00a0 ble Peter, i p\u00e5 vente av \u00e5 komme inn p\u00e5 flyskolen, utdannet som mekanikker. Da de norske Fairchildene ble overf\u00f8rt fra England til Norge var Peter med i et av flyene som mekanikker.<\/p>\n<p>Vel hjemme i Norge kom Peter i 1947 inn p\u00e5 det f\u00f8rste flyskolekullet etter krigen. Etter \u00e5 ha fullf\u00f8rt utdanningen p\u00e5 Gardermoen med Fairchild og Harvard, ble han postet til 331 skvadron som var oppsatt med Spitfire. Etter mottak av de f\u00f8rste Vampie-flyene i 1948 ble skvadronene delt inn i A-ving med Spitfire og en B-ving med Vampire. Peter fikk dermed fly begge disse flytypene i 331 skvadron. I 1949 startet han p\u00e5 det f\u00f8rste kullet p\u00e5 Luftkrigsskolen som han ble uteksaminert fra noe f\u00f8r tiden i 1951. \u00c5rsaken til dette var at stridighetene i Korea og den spente verdenssituasjonen som gjorde at Forsvaret \u00f8nsket alle tilgjengelige flygere tilbake til skvadronene.<\/p>\n<p>V\u00e5ren 1951 ble Peter og to andre flygere sendt til den amerikanske 526 Fighter Bomber Squadron p\u00e5 Giebelstadt Air Base i Vest-Tyskland for \u00e5 bli de f\u00f8rste norske flygeren til \u00e5 f\u00e5 utsjekk p\u00e5 F-84 Thunderjet, som Norge etter hvert fikk 206 stykker av gjennom v\u00e5penhjelpavtalen. Etter utsjekken p\u00e5 F-84 ble Peter naturlig nok postet til 334 skvadron\u00a0 p\u00e5 Sola som var utpekt som den f\u00f8rste skvadronen til \u00e5 settes opp med den amerikanske jetjageren. 1. oktober 1951 ble Peter den f\u00f8rste norske flygeren til \u00e5 fly et norsk F-84 Thunderjet i Norge.<\/p>\n<p>Etter \u00e5 ha avsluttet tiden ved 334 skvadron som skvadronsjef fra slutten av april til 1. novmeber 1954, gikk Peter p\u00e5 stabsskolen, var deretter en periode p\u00e5 \u00d8rland, f\u00f8r han ble studieleder p\u00e5 stabsskolen. Deretter gikk veien videre til 718 skvadron som skvadronssjef fra 1959 til 1961. Derifra fikk han beordring som sjef for 335 skvadron, og et nytt \u00a0milj\u00f8, ettersom han aldri tidligere hadde jobbet med transportfly.<\/p>\n<p>Hans neste jobb var operasjonsgruppesjef p\u00e5 Gardermoen, der han ogs\u00e5 ledet 332 skvadrons, Joker team etter skvadronens overgang til F-86K. Deretter fikk han en periode i Kongo som \u00a0kontingentsjef for de norske styrkene som deltok i Kongokrisen i 1963. Etter det ble han beordret til operasjonsgruppesjef p\u00e5 Bardufoss. Etter en periode her vente han s\u00f8rover igjen for \u00e5 ta fatt p\u00e5 jobben som Flytryggingsinspekt\u00f8r. I 1968 gikk veien atter en gang til Nord-Norge og Bardufoss hvor han var stasjonssjef frem til han i 1973 ble norsk flyattasj\u00e9 i Washington D.C. Her jobbet han frem til han gikk over til den sivile luftfarten i 1975. Da han la sin milit\u00e6re karriere p\u00e5 hylla var han blitt oberstl\u00f8ytnant.<\/p>\n<p>Ogs\u00e5 innenfor den sivile luftfarten fikk Peter Nissen en meget innholdsrik karriere. Da han forlot forsvaret i 1975 var det for \u00e5 g\u00e5 over i sjefsjobben i det nylig etablerte selskapet Offshore Helicopters. I l\u00f8pet av sine fem \u00e5r som stasjonssjef p\u00e5 Bardufoss hadde han tross alt f\u00e5tt over 1000 timer i UH-1B ettersom 339 skvadron holdt til p\u00e5 flystasjonen med sine helikoptre.<\/p>\n<p>I 1977 ble han administrerende direkt\u00f8r i Fred. Olsens Flyselskap og i 1982 ble han administrerende direkt\u00f8r i Wider\u00f8e. Denne stillingen hadde han til 1988. I denne perioden var han ogs\u00e5 president i Norsk Aeroklubb og styremedlem og etter hvert styreleder i R\u00f8de Kors Automatene. Da Peter gikk av med pensjon fra luftfartens tjeneste i 1988, overtok han jobben som daglig leder i R\u00f8de Kors Automatene. En jobb han hadde frem til 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Nissen ble intervjuet av Sondre B.
